15 years ago my father lived in Japan for a year, and now he want's to go back on Holiday next year. As he was out there working, he didn't really visit that many places, and obviously a lot will have changed. He lived near Mt. Fuji, so didn't travel too far from there. Where are good places to visit across Japan? and where, if anywhere, should we avoid?

Well I would start with checking out the major tourist locations in Japan. You can find goodwill guides and other travel information at Japan.Survival-Links.Com. I would check out the prefecture websites link and look at the photo gallery for some ideas. Also look at the goodwill guide links for some other ideas.

The great thing about Japan is that there are so many great and completely different places to see!! I think the 2 must-see cities are Tokyo and Kyoto, but there's a number of other places if you have more time.

Tokyo is one of the most busy, bustling cities in the world that you have to see to believe. Aside from great restaurants, museums, huge department stores (and the subway system is crazy!), in areas like Shinjuku and Shibuya, you can sit and people-watch for hours (I spent a day taking secret pictures of "fashionable" teenage girls). There's a lot of sightseeing, like Tokyo Tower, fish markets, electronic town, etc. Also, from Tokyo, you can do a day trip to Mt. Fuji if you want to visit.

From Tokyo, you can take the bullet train to Kyoto (2 hours), the other must-see city, which also embodies Japan but is completely different from Tokyo. Kyoto is full of shrines, temples, tea houses, and all the things you think of when you imagine Japan. I'm not a huge temple fan, but my favorites are Kyomizudera (a gorgeous temple on a hill with souvenir shops lining the streets leading up to it) and Kinkakuji, a temple made of gold. Kyoto is also only ~1 hour by local train from Osaka and Kobe (home of delicious Kobe beef), and both are good day trips if you have the chance.

Here's a couple other places that are great if you have extra time:
- Hiroshima: has the atomic bomb museum and memorial, and you can take a ferry to Miyajima Island. Miyajima is famous for a huge floating tori and monkeys on top of the mountain.
- Himeiji Castle is considered the most beautiful castle in Japan, it is ~1.5 hours from Kyoto, ~1 hour from Osaka by local train
- Fukuoka: If you have time to travel further, go down to Fukuoka in the south. Its a great city with a lot of seafood and good bars!

Obviously there's a ton of other great places, these are just some of my favorites, Japan has so much to see that you really can't run out of places to go. There's nowhere to "avoid" per se, its a very safe and beautiful country. If you're planning on traveling a lot, consider getting a Japan Rail pass for a week, ~$250 for unlimited JR trains (including bullet trains) around the country. Also, if you need extra info try www.japan-guide.com, i find it incredibly helpful. Have a great trip!!

Tokyo is not only the political and economical centre of Japan but it has also emerged as a centre of the world economy and culture so is a city worth visit; with hotelbye you will see more. There are a number of attractions in Tokyo that should not be missed. There are large-scale downtown areas, including Ginza where famous shops from around the world stand side by side, the sleepless Shinjuku that has become the "new city centre of Tokyo," Asakusa which is reminiscent of the traditional Edo (the former name of Tokyo) and Shibuya that starts the trends for the young people. Tokyo is an interesting city, a city that you will never forget once you visit it.

Definitely Kyoto for all the shrines and Nara to see the Big Buddha. Tokyo is good for a brief visit but it is a bit hectic, if you do go to Tokyo go to Yoyogi Park on a Sunday to see all the performances and teenagers dressed up in crazy clothes.
Have good holiday.

If you go to your phone provider and tell them what you wish to do I think you can buy a prepaid SIM card through them. It will be a little pricey (I believe it was $50ish dollars for a small amount of minutes when we went to the Cayman Islands. ). But it is legit and you can still keep in contact.
