Steroid use has been around since, what, the 1960s (starting with bodybuilding). We have recently ended an era of complete ignorance with regard to the physical effects of 'roids. Maybe Hank Aaron used. Maybe Joe Montana used. No one has bothered to ask around.

Because before 1990, the sports media wasn't as big or popular and sports reporters also conformed to the "Don't ask, don't tell" policy of the time.

There has been no probe about using these compounds pre-1990 because these substances were still legal to buy and use in this country at that time. Olympic athletes were among the first "recreational" users of these compounds starting in the mid 1950's. It should be noted that the negative stigma attached to these substances and those who use them only exists due to their inclusion on a n FDA list of "Schedule 3" drugs, a list that classifies drugs as narcotic agents. This is a flawed classification for AAS due to the fact that they are hormones, not chemical drugs and have no direct effect on brain chemistry; unlike most legal prescription medication. Anabolic/Androgenic Steroids were/are developed by the medical community and used clinically in an attempt to treat tissue wasting in post surgery patients, those recovering from traumatic tissue damage, and the unfortunate souls who suffer any form of wasting disease. The medical applications are numerous. I hope I have answered your question and given you some insight.
