Question: If the numbers on a check indicating the amount for which it is written differ from the words on the check indicating the amount for which it is written, which controls?

Answer: U.C.C. section 3-114 answers your question as follows: “If an instrument contains contradictory terms…words prevail over numbers.” Thus, if the numbers on a check indicating the amount for which it is written differ from the words on the check indicating the amount for which it is written, the words control.

I have seen the "written amount" honored.
The numbered amount can be changed in some cases but not easily so in writing.
