Let's say, all other details the same, except Harry's name is Tito Rodriguez... and his accent is Puerto Rican, and he says words like "Wepa" (Way-Pah), and "vaya, vaya, vaya". for his magic.... would you still be a fan? What if he were Harry Jackson... and black... everything else the same.. would you be a fan?

Nowadays I think people would still like it if it was Latino. Just like everyone loves Dora the Explorer and Dragon Tales. If it was Latino it probably would have a cartoon by now if you think about it. As for Harry being Black with the last name Jackson. Give me a break. Do you really think it would be big? They would probably put it on UPN or the WB or BET and call it a day. I'm just being honest based on what's going on in the tv world now. Plus, the whole "black magic" thing would be even crazier with even more people calling Harry "of the devil." and they would probably associate it with Haiti and voodoo and all that crap. America needs to be honest with itself. The only large successful black children's movie was The Lion King and that consisted of animals.

Hmmm...
Harry is awesome no matter what origin he is!
Liking Harry`s British accent is the same as liking any accent being Puerto Rican or anything.
And I already don`t know what the spells he says mean, so a little "Wepa" and some "Vaya, Vaya, Vaya" wouldn`t hurt either.
And I also have nothing against Africans (or Latinos in that matter also) I guess I`m not a racist person, and I like people for who they are, and everyone else should too.
I don`t find it off-beat in any way either.
I also think that JK Rowling wasn`t trying to leave out any races in the book either. In the book there is Cho of an Asian culture, the two twins which I`m guessing are Indian, I do recall an African boy... I`m pretty sure you get my point.
However the setting for the story is most likely in Britain or England or somewhere you can have that accent.

His name could be the same. It would be different because England has all those strange things. Strange important things. If it happened in England, Everything you said, I might. I'm not so sure about "Wepa" and "vaya, vaya, vaya." The spells Harry says are important and have meaning.

If Harry Potter were Latino, he might have had some idea what the "Sectumsempra" spell did before he tried it out on Draco and ended up slashing him half to death. :-)
Other than that, it would be pretty much the same story ... there's probably a school like Hogwarts in Latin America someplace, so maybe the story is already there and just waiting for someone to write it.

I don't think Harry's race/ethnic background has anything to do with the success of the series. It's a classic tale of good vs evil, the underdog being triumphant. I am a black adult and totally in love with the whirlwind that is Harry Potter.
I believe we could relate to him portrayed as any ethnicity, but part of the allure is that he is not American (or if you're in China, he's not Chinese), so you get a peek into a culture that you may not be familiar with...and isn't that what reading's all about?!

Probably...it would be weird...there aren't exactly as many books written about Puerto Ricans that are popular enough to be sold in the US, as books about Brits that are popular enough to be sold in the US! I don't know...I'm not racist, so I guess I would still be a fan...? That's a very uncomfortable question.

Yes I would still be a fan. I teach in a school that is 66% black and 33% Latino.

I don't think that he does, no. If it were Tom Riddle, that might be a different story. Due to how Tom Riddle was described, I have a nice mental picture of him. But Voldemort? Not really.

I hate harry potter, but it has nothing to do with him being english. Most of the spell words come from latin, so who gives a crap what language he's speaking. The books are poorly written no matter what! I don't think ANYONE cares about HP's ethnicity. That's just weird!
