that's a little hard because a stranger I don't know who he has slept with and if he has any STD'S so only that thought would make me really nervous, and an there is a reason why they are EX lovers...but I guess I would go with the ex lover.

I would say with a stranger, because that doesn't necessarily mean that your significant other has feelings towards that stranger, just a moment of weakness.

I know I would find it much more acceptable if spouse had a one night stand that hooked up with one of his exes again. That could open a whole can of worms I'd rather not deal with.
So I can only assume he'd rather I had a one night stand, sex only fling than got reinvolved with one of my exes as well.

No, uh . . . one night stand. By far. I'd be so insulting to say, "Hey, I cheated on you with someone I decided long ago not to be with anymore" rather than "OK, I saw a guy who looked exactly like David Tennant, and well, I couldn't help myself."
But I seriously wouldn't cheat!
