You should automatically be entitled to it 24 months after your date of entitlement to Disability Benefits.
That's Part A - Hospital and Part B- Supplemental Medical. I'm not sure about Part D - prescription drugs, since I retired before that became effective.
Your entitlement to Health Insurance should be automatic and you should be notified a couple of months before your entitlement date. At that time you're receive your cards and a response card as to whether or not you want it. If you don't want the health insurance, you send in the card.
Be careful here - some disabled folks don't think they need it because their own health insurance is primary, but in many cases, ti will switch once you have 24 months of entitlement to DIB benefits. You really need to check this out before you do anything. Don't play around with this - or you may be penalized. You don't want that!!!
So if you have any quesitons - go to the ssa website - Don't second guess about medical insurance!
WWW.SSA.GOV - or call their 800 number up - get it from their website.

If you receive Social Security, then you get Medicare, however you pay a premium for Part B, currently that is $93.50 which comes out of your benefit, Part A was paid for while you worked. As for Medicaid that is attached to Supplement Security Insurance(SSI). Its possible that if your benefit from Social Security is low enough you could get SSI too.

You must be on disability for two years before you get Medicare Part A, but you will probably qualify for Medicaid right away and continue on Medicaid after Medicare kicks in.

Here's a link for California. I would assume that most states are the same way. I live in Michigan and had to wait 2 years before I was automatically eligible. It does appear that you can get it right away if you pay the higher premium.Otherwise you should apply for Medicaid to see if you are eligible for it now.

Normally, yes--asl long as your income is low enough to get disabilitiy payments.. And they'll send you paperwork explining it. However--it can't hurt to ask, or do some self-education.Checkout the Social Security website: ssa.gov
