The city or the industry?
The city was in terrible condition then, really run-down. They've done a lot to improve it in the last few years...
It's not fabulous now, but it looks great compared to what it looked like in the 80's.

If you mean the movie industry, 1983 had it's share of successes, including the last of the original Star Wars trilogy ("Return of the Jedi"), "Flashdance", "Trading Places", "WarGames", another 007 film ("Octopussy"), "Risky Business"... But then again, it was also the year that game us "Superman III" and "Staying Alive" (the miserable sequel to "Saturday Night Fever")...

The same, except that we didn't know as much because there was really no internet. The media coverage has gotten more invasive and sensational, but other than that it was the same.
