take each of the bigger numbers, and subtract the next number from it:
eg, 100 - 96 = 4
therefore the next number is the series is: 100 + 4 = 104
similarly, 104 - 88 = 16
therefore the next number is 104 + 16 = 120
therefore, for your answer:
120 - 56 = 64, which implies, 120 + 64 = 184

By observation, you will notice that the difference between each number is doubles the previous difference, except that the sign changes in each difference from plus to minus to plus, etc. when computing the next number in the series.
For example
100 96 104
First difference is 4 (from 100 to 96, but negative, going
down)
Second difference is 8 (double of the prior difference of 4,
but with a positive sign going toward the next number 104).
The last difference is a negative 64 (120 to 56).
Therefore, the next difference will be a doubling of 64 or
128, with a positive sign to compute the next number.
56 + 128 = 184 THE ANSWER OR NEXT NO. IN

so the sign is alternating and the numbers are doubling.
since down 64 is -64 the next number will be + 2*64 or +128

There are two factors to observe:
(1) The values are going up and down in sequence.
(2) The number change doubles up with each step.
4↓,8↑,16↓,32↑,64↓,128↑......
So you start off with a 100, and go down 4.
Now with 96, go up 8.
Now with 104, go down 16.
Continue the pattern.
