Lily Potter's protective charm broke once Harry turned 17 correct. So therefore why, why does Voldemort having Harry's blood in his veins keep the protective charm alive. Why is this?

IT DOESN'T. That is not what keeps Harry alive! I just answered something like this mere moments ago. The thing that keeps him alive is his willingness to die. The protective charm is over and done, forget about it! It's not a plot hole, it would be far too large to even pretend not to notice!

The charm that ended when Harry turned 17 was the one that Dumbledore himself created using an ancient magic. That charm went like this: Lily sacrificed her blood for Harry. His further protection would then be found in the place where her blood still resided -- in her sister at 4 Privet Drive. As long as Harry could call that place home, he would be protected. This charm was due to cease operating when Harry came of age and no longer could be considered a dependent.

The enchantment that is in Harry's blood is one that his mother created by her sacrifice. Dumbledore piggybacked his own enchantment onto this one, but it is an entirely separate thing. Lily's enchantment will always live in Harry's body, and when Voldemort took a bit of that enchanted blood, it tethered Harry to life as long as Voldemort was still alive.

I think it has less to do with the charm than the fact that Voldemort shares Harry's blood. That tightens the link between them, the link first established when Voldemort chose to attack Harry after hearing the prophecy.

It works both ways: neither can live while the other survives BUT also neither can die if the other lives. It's like Harry as the Horcrux in reverse.

I think JK did a poor job of explaining this part. The protective charm isn't still working-it only worked when he was 16 and younger and it only worked in his uncle's house. I'm not 100% sure how but Voldy having harry's blood kind of made him a horcrux for harry. I don't think it had anything to do with him sacrificing himself like others have said. The sacfice protected everyone else like his mothers charm.-remember voldy's charms didn't work right on the others after he "killed" harry. If he had fought voldy and been struck down he still would have lived.

***Voldemort having Harry's blood in his veins does not keep the protective charm alive

Remember the prophecy........
......either must die at the hand of the other for neither can live while the other survives...

Just as Voldemort cannot die while his soul fragment remains in Harry, Harry cannot be killed while his blood lives in Voldemort's body.

Dumbledore explains to Harry that Voldemort's soul fragment within Harry was destroyed by the killing curse. This is the soul fragment that is shown as baby creature thing underneath the chair at Kings Cross station.

So Harry (Voldemort's fragment inside Harry) dies at the hands of Voldemort (either must die at the hand of the other).

Although Harry is not actually dead, he has the to choice to move on to the next world or return to the living.

Later Harry returns to the living.

Lilys blood still ran through harrys veins. it was passed into voldermort. BUT the protection charm they refer to, actually shields the house from Voldermort thats why the dursleys had to leave privet drive too for their own protection

voldy kills him first, but he doesn't die, you see when voldy took some of his blood it made him part of him. also harry was a horcrux, so voldy killed part of himself. and the last reason is that voldy was hiding in the forest, so when harry followed some death eaters there he knew he was going to die, and he was sacrificing himself to save everyone, so his courage and bravery is what overcame death.

he goes to kings cross in his mind and talks to dumbledore, and then comes back and voldy rejoices and takes him back to the great hall

it doesn't. He stays alive because he chooses to die, and because the part of Voldy's soul is killed, not Harry's.

I've wondered this myself, and I must now conclude that I have absolutely no idea. It is a bit of a plot hole...
