I recommend any of the books by Avi; other good authors include Lloyd Alexander, Cornelia Funke and Diana Wynne Jones. Some good series are

The Last Apprentice, Joseph Delaney
Faerie Wars, Herbie Brennan
Silverwing, Kenneth Oppel
The Gregor books, Suzanne Collins
City of Ember, Jean duPrau

Horns and Wrinkles, by Joseph Helgerson is also good and so is The Invention of Hugo Cabret, by Brian Selznick.

Hope you enjoy!

Well, nothing will quite compare to Harry, but...if you're a girl, Camp Confidential is good. (First book is "Natalie's Secret" by Melissa J. Morgan.) That's about a sleepaway summer camp in PA. The Warriors series is good for either gender. (First book is "Into the Wild" by Erin Hunter.) That's about the world of a forest cat, but it could happen, because it's within our world. There are humans living in their world, too. I actually have books from both series at home right now, waiting for me to read them!

I would really recommend 'His Dark Materials' trilogy by Philip Pullman (consists of "The Golden Compass", "The Subtle Knife", and "The Amber Spyglass") and the 'Inheritance' trilogy by Christopher Paolini (consisting and "Eragon" and "Eldest" right now). These books are fantasy stories and are just as good and entertaining as the Harry Potter series.
