Outerbanks hands down.

Myrtle Beach is a dump

Parts of the outer banks can have rough waves at times, while Myrtle Beach waves are ususally calmer. I have not been to the outer banks in a long time but grew up in Myrtle Beach. MB is a busy beach town with lots of restaurants, shops, and things to do. The outer banks used to be pretty laid back and slower paced.

Before you decide, my favorite beach area on the east coast would be along NC 58 between Moorehead City and Camp Lejeune. The beach is wide, water is nice, and the pace would be somewhere between the outer banks and MB. I visited a friend at a beach house in Emerald Isle once and loved it!

They are very different from each other.

Myrtle Beach has a ton of restaurants, carnival rides, golf courses, shopping etc.. The ocean water is warm, but not the real blue water like in the tropics.

OBX has none of the stuff that Myrtle Beach has. It's more like a big beach. The water is a beautiful blue on the Atlantic side, but as I recall not as warm as Myrtle Beach, but still plenty warm enough to swim in comfortably.

If you want to rent a house/cabin, cook for yourself, spend the time on the beach - lots of peace and quiet. Go to OBX.

If you want to go out for dinners, go shopping in outlets, go to bars, maybe see a show or go golfing. Go to Myrtle Beach.
