They'd have to use the women's room if they don't want to attract attention. I think a woman standing up at a urinal would be a dead giveaway, don't you?

Generally speaking, in a gay nightclub, they will use either...
But anywhere else, they generally feel more comfortable with the ladies.
At nightclubs with a heavy straight population, its generally the girls that are more open to transgendered people and drag queens... so it just feels safer.
But then, that is not a hard fast rule either... occasionally the guys are more accepting and the girls get jealous! (at a straight club in a city with a heavy gay population this can be the case sometimes.)

They have to really take in consideration whos facility them use. I heard of a drag queen using the women's restroom and getting caught.

At the bar I've been going to they have their own dressing room, (the same one that all performers use, its not just the "drag" room) but I've seen them in the men's room as well.

I have read books on the subject. There's no hard and fast rule. It's whatever the person is passing for at the time.
