There are people who practice a religion known as Wicca, and refer to themselves as witches. They may perform spells which are about as effective as prayers, but they have never proven to have "magic powers" like you're thinking of, like flying on brooms or whatever. They are generally good people, and are very much against any evil or Satanic practices.

Yes, there are real witches. Witches are people who practise the craft. Some are Wiccan some are not. It takes many years of study and practise. I am on the Wiccan path but do not feel I have done enough yet to call myself a witch. If you go into the Religion and Spirituality Section you will encounter many experienced witches who can answer any questions you may have.

Yes witches are very real and have a long interesting history. In fact you probably know a few witches and don't even realize it. I refer to myself as a witch but unfortunatley due to some people's closed minds I am unable to really advertise it in any way.
We have been persecuted in the past and continue to be persecuted in different ways even today.
Oh, and I would also like to note here that witchcraft is not neccessarily a religion. It is entirely possible to practice witchcraft outside of any religion. Wicca is a earth based religion that uses witchcraft in the rituals.

Yes there are witches. I happen to be a wiccan that practices witchcraft. Spells do work, it just takes time, belief, and they don't always work the way you want or think they're going to work. Trust me on this one, I've had a couple spells do that to me.
Wicca has been around for a long time, and unlike most religions has changed, because it is a forgiving religion, and an ever-changing one at that. The belief in the goddess has been around since the beginning of time, before even Christianity came into being. Christians just incorporated pagan sabats into their belifs so they could bring more people into Christianity.
And if you don't believe me, here are just a few sites that you could visit.

They are real, and they have existed for a long time, but they are not just how we are used to picture them.
In México there are lots of women and men, who practice witchcraft, many of them are only actors and do it to make money, but i believe that there exists some of them who can really make things happen.
The immage we have on witches comes from the earlier times, when the usual clothes were just like that to everybody, and when the inquisition accused many women for being witches but most of them didn't really do anything but make somethings that the church didn't like.

Yes and No.
Are there poor deluded people out there, believing they have great supernatural and mystical powers? Yes. Do they really have any? No.
If there is any truth to the old saying "Those who can, do. Those who can't, teach.", that truth is found in the occult, and Wicca in particular. Silver Ravenwolf has written close to a dozen books on the subject of "The Craft", and claims she has been studying it since about 1969, which is almost as long as I’ve been alive. She has written a book on how to cast money spells, and includes a chapter on how to do so in her Teen Witch book. But the thing is, she doesn't particularly sound all that prosperous herself. Ravenwolf writes,
" For years I couldn't afford to go to a hair stylist (still can't, it's shop and chop for me). I got pretty good at stying my own hair from looking at magazine pictures" [SOURCE: Teen Witch, Llewellyn Publications, 2003 edition, page 145]
OK, she so rich she can't go to the hairdresser. Therefore we can conclude: She is unable to use magic to cast spells for money, or else life would not be a struggle for her.
...and yet, she has written dozens of money spells, including a whole book on them. Obviously, she's self-deluded or a fake. This is true of every occultist. I spent hundreds of dollars on occult books and wasted years of my life before I finally figured it out.
Silver Ravenwolf seems to have inadvertently discovered that Wicca makes things worse, but won't ever admit it as such.
In Teen Witch she says
"A lot of people tell me how bad their lives have gotten after casting a spell and tell me they won't do Witchcraft anymore. I tell them their lives would have been much worse for not having cast the spell".
Gee Silver, you would think a lot of people would be saying things like "Hey, Silver Ravenwolf, my life has improved tremendously with Wicca!" if Wicca is as great as they claim. Instead it makes lives much worse, and even Silver Ravenwolf admits she hears this a lot!!!
Gardner created Wicca circa 1954. All other Wiccan sects came after. Most Neopagan sects resemble Wicca in some way or the other because they're Johnny come lateley's too.
