A regular socket has just one contact in the center. The part of the 3-way connected to that only-one contact is the higher wattage (=100).

For dimmest the bulb uses the other contact (=50). For brightest both are used (=50+100) but only a 3-way socket accesses those added choices.

The bulbs that I have are 50-100-150. As near as I can tell , in a one way socket, the 100 watt is burning.`
