I have tried searching for 'authorof42' but neither search engine finds anything except Yahoo Answers pages! My website is www.geocities.com/authorof42. It's just a personal website so I would rather do this for free if possible (I'm not bothered about how high up the list it is). Any ideas?

Your website construction is very poor and unless you do some work on your site it will never be indexed.
This is what this site says about your page:
http://www.submitexpress.com/analyzer/
Meta tags analysis.
Title:Title relevancy to page content is terrible.
The Title relevancy to page content is 0%.
(*You do not even have a Title for your webpage!)
Description:Found no description meta tag.
The description meta tag is used by most of the search engines. Consider to add a description meta tag.
Keywords:Found no keywords meta tag.
The keyword meta tag is still used by many search engines. Consider to add a keyword meta tag.
Robots:Found no robots meta tag.
This tag is not really required but helps spiders to index the web page.
You need to attend to the above and add some of your keyword rich content to your site.
Use this free service to generate meta tags
http://www.submitexpress.com/metatags.html
then keep using both of the above sites until you have it right.
Submitting your site and a sitemap to the search engines is another way but not until you improve it.

I also did a search like one of the other people said and I only got 8 results and you're right they are all from yahoo answers which I'm guessing is because "authorof42" shows up somewhere in your posts.

Do you have that same search word on your website? In other words do you have "authorof42" appearing somewhere on your website?

Trying adding that term to your website and wait a few days to see if it shows up.

Just out of curiousity I did a search for my own screenname and the search returned about 900 results and they seem to have to do with the different sites that I have joined like myspace, etc., but my website and my blog appears on the search also - and I'm thinking its mainly because "sister2brother" appears on the contents of the pages/sites/blogs.

Both Yahoo and Google are not good at searching for web site names. Try entering the name of your web page (i.e. 42.pdf) I did and got 340,000 listings with similar names. You didn't say how long your site has been up for because it takes time for spiders to build up information about you. It's also up to you to find ways of getting your site close to the top of the rankings. You're probably near the bottom at present.

You just need the bots from the search engines to visit your site. I have a web ring page and would be happy to give you a link in exchange for one on your site. Click my picture to look at my profile and there is a link to my personal site there. You can email me by clicking the email button on the website.

It's not free but http://www.doggydomains.com has a package called traffic blazer that helps you optimize your site for search engines and then submits it for you. I think it's nly like $20
