If you have access to a sewing machine I know a great back-to-school gift suited for both boys and girls. You can make "crayon cozies". It's a fabric crayon holder that holds 16 crayons and rolls up so it can be easily put into their backpacks or stored neatly in a drawer at home. You can also personalize each cozy with each child's name either with iron on letters or dimensional fabric paint. It's a fun project for you and it's pretty fast if you are familar with a sewing machine, if not, you will catch on pretty quick because it's a simple straight stitch.

How about papier mache puppets? (Actually, you could supervise while the kids do it - keeps them happy for hours) Make flour/water glue then cover an old lightbulb with wet pieces of newspaper. Cover this with glue and stick dry bits of paper on top. Repeat until you have built up to the thickness you want and then leave it to dry completely. (takes a day or so) Carefully cut in half with sharp knife, remove the lightbulb and stick the shell back together with paper & glue. This forms the puppet head so paint the face and stick on wool or something suitable for hair. Sew the 'glove' part out of an oddment of fabric and attach to the bottom of the 'head' with stitching or superglue.

Maybe for the girls make a suncatcher for there bedroom window or beaded necklaces. For the boys, thats a little harder. I know I've seen like wooden cars and trucks at Michaels. You could paint them in there favorite colors. Or maybe you could also get all the kids together and do a project.

I think you are very kind hearted. Lately and sadly, every child expect money from adults. This materialistic world is teaching them to expect money, and if you give them something else they will Thank you but......you know. Otherwise, in Michael's arts and crafts they have this art kits for kids, they have color pencils, markers, watercolors etc, they are under $10.00. The kids usually love this.
