stuff that ripples traditional Christian beliefs seems popular (DaVinci Code, The God Delusion, Angels and Demons, etc.)
In young adult, lots of fantasy like Harry Potter, Eragon etc
whistle-blowing journalism (Michael Moore, Fast Food Nation, Supersize Me, etc)

When I saw the title of your post, my immediate thought was chick-lit. They're all over the place these days! The first thing I see every time I walk into my local book store is a table full of pastel-coloured books. I admit there are a few I've read and loved (two series in particular), but honestly, most of them are crap - about girls who lose their identity and self after falling for some wayward guy. They're just silly... and most of them not in a good way!
I think there's also a trend in fantasy books for kids/teens. Ever since Harry Potter came out, everyone's trying to cash in on the success of that series. Especially now, kids are going to be looking for something else to fill the gap that HP left now that the series is done. Eragon springs to mind, but there are a few other series and solo books out there that are flying off the shelves.

Over the last few years I have noticed a lot of left vs right political bashing books. A funny trend but a seemingly viable one:
The Truth (with jokes) by Al Franken
Lies and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them: A Fair and Balanced Look at the Right by Al Franken
New Rules: Polite Musings from a Timid Observer by Bill Maher
How to Talk to a Liberal (If You Must) by Ann Coulter
Deliver Us from Evil : Defeating Terrorism, Despotism, and Liberalism Hardcover by Sean Hannity
Who's Looking Out for You? by Bill O'Reilly
etc
etc

Paranormal romance seems to be a growing genre. Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Laurel K. Hamilton were the beginning and now I see piles of it. All types of vampire novels are popular where I am right now and it is starting to branch out into other types of magical beings like werewolves and faeries. The werewolves seem to be especially popular this summer for some reason. What is weird about the paranormal/vampire trend is it seems to cross all social boundaries. People of all ages, races, and genders seem to be into it the only group who doesn't seem to get it are teenage boys. I'm not sure I would say I would like to see more of this particular genre but I do find it interesting how many different people seem to like it.

I see allot of alternate history fiction. Its OK, if you are up on your history. Mr. Stirling is probably the best I've read. I've tried to read Harry Turtledove's Civil War series and I drowned in the historic details.
