I need to find a way to seal styrofoam so that peices don't flake off and so that it can't melt when you put paint on it. I just want a smooth sealer that can be painted on without it melting. Anyone know any products that can do that? Help? Thanx.

Extruded-polystyrene or Styrofoam are fun products to deal with (NOT)... any alcohol-based paints will melt the foam, and they don't readily take many materials as sealant / covering.

I use both products in my model-railroading hobby and my business as a props-maker... the BEST think I've found to cover and smooth them prior to painting is plaster-gauze !!

I use Woodland Scenics "Plaster-Cloth"... which comes in rolls of 8" x 5 yards (10 sq ft) for a cost of ~ $9 per roll.

You cut lengths , dip them in water, and apply to the foam, smoothing it and it then dries and forms a firm shell over the foam. I usually then apply a light, thin coat of "Hydrocal" (a very light plaster) over the cloth, and then sand again until smooth.

This material strengthens the foam and will take almost any paint / stain after a primer coat. Without extreme handling it will also last for years.

Good Luck !! OH... the Woodland Scenics products can be found at almost any Hobby-shop that deals with model-railroad products.
