Is it true you go back to school in AUGUST or was someone just pulling my leg?
Thats smack in the middle of summer!

I guess I should have asked if it might have anything to do with farming perhaps?
It seems odd that even our (Canadian) Wal-Mart already has school stuff out...my kids just left for summer camp...LOL
And13th? What's wrong with COMMENCE? LOL

August here in the South. It varies. Where I am originally from, up north, it began after Labor Day in September.

It's different dates in different areas. But around here, yes, kids do go back to school in August. My younger brother is going to the sixth grade on August 6th this year. I remember when I was going to sixth grade, we didn't go back until the middle of September! We actually got the whole summer off! Kids today are maybe getting half. It's horrible!
EDIT: Umm... I don't see where farming has anything to do with when school sessions start back up..... I just always figured it was the government's way of cutting out vacations period! It's all a big conspiracy!

Depends on the state and city the school is in. They vary from as early as mid-August to early September.
The only real requirements are set out by the federal government in the number of school days that must be completed before they will provide funding. This requirement is then used by the state governments in determining the number of school days that the state will require for graduation. Some states go with a bare minimum while other go beyond that. In general you expect a child in school to attend 180 days of school each year.

Where I live, kids go back to school August 9th. My university starts back August 22nd.

My boys start August 9th, that's the usual start up time, they start 2nd week of August and get out the 3rd week of May.
