Unfortunately it's virtually impossible to accurately diagnose the fault on your car without hearing it and seeing it. It could be ignition or valve timing; if it's a fairly recent car it could be the engine management system. I suggest you ask around in your circle of friends, someone may have an idea how to help point you in the right direction or may even know a reliable mechanic. I'm sorry that I can't be more specific. also, if your car is recent, a Rover Service Centre could use a diagnostic tester which would probably find the fault very quickly. Although it won't be very cheap it might cost less in the longer term than having an unskilled amateur working on the trial and error principle. I wish you luck.

Sadly the most common cause of rovers running like a bag of bolts is head gasket failure.
Open the coolant reservoir and check for any oil sludge in the coolant. Lift the dipstick and check for any creamy substance on the bottom of it. Look for the same thing under your oil filler cap. After running carefully open the cap on the coolant reservoir and listen for any pressure- a lot of hissing. If some/all of these are present then you have your answer although a compression test will confirm it.
Other than that possible causes are endless and impossible to diagnose without checking the car.

If you feel that you are being taken advantage of, then it is time to fnd another garage to do the work. Ask your friends and co-workers if they know of a good shop to take your car.
Since no one online can really tell you what the problem is, you will have to take it somewhere. You didn't mention if you took the car back to the dealer, or not.
Good luck.

you have to be a bit more specific or be able to answer questions to try to ascertain faults. there are rover clubs online where you can join and post for free, I think this is your best way forward if you can't get a mechanic you can trust. try http://forums.mg-rover.org/forumdisplay.php?f=101

How do you mean. chugging? Im not an expert, but im told "kangarooing" could be due to water or air in fuel pipes.

it could "chugg" for a number of reasons, dirty fuel filter, cloged fuel hose, low on fuel, timing not set correctly, the whole ignitions sytem i.e. distributar cap, points, plugs and leads, any more details, what work did you have done?
