sorry i'm not sure what it's called. it's an old lawn mower (12 years probably) and the rope just dry rotted out. however, the lawn mower itself is still in good shape. just wondering if this is an easy, cheap fix. thanks!

Yes. It is easy. A replacement pull cord kit (new rope and a handle) is a few bucks at most hardware places.

Typically you unbolt the section that includes the place where the rope comes out. That takes off the cover and an internal reel the rope is wound on. Look at how the old rope is in there and how long it is. Take it off.

Make a fat knot on one end of the new rope and pass that end through the handle and then put that end through the outside of the hole the rope comes out of. Now check the length of the new rope so it is as long as you want plus enough for a knot on the other end. Put a loose knot through that end and catch the knot in the notch of the reel. Wrap the cord around the reel. Make sure that it holds the handle snugly against the outside of the hole (no extra slop in the rope). Now take it off and do a good tight knot and snip the extra rope to get the length.

If the rope is plastic hold a match to the end of the rope to keep it from unraveling. Put the cover back on and put bolts in loosely. Pull the rope and make sure rope retracts completely. If good tighten bolts. If wrong trim the rope and recheck.

Depends on the motor. Some models are worse than others. It can be a cheap easy fix or a pain. If the spring in the recoil..... what makes the cord windup..... comes loose it will not be fun to fix. If it doesn't it will be a piece of cake. I have had some go both ways. If the spring comes out I usually just go and buy a new recoil.

My husband just got a new rope and installed it on our lawn mower- and he's not exactly mechanically inclined. You should be able to find a new cord in Ace Hardware or a similar store.

I think my hubby replaced one of these for less than 20 bucks, but I don't know how hard it was for him to fix. Couldnt' have been to hard because he did fix it ;)
