The economic and social support system of the family unit, derived originally from tribal custom. Marriage at least was a way to create order within the tribe, and assigning responsibilities within the family clusters.

Outside of marriage, and in modern terms, the only benefit is reduction of STDs. And that is even questionable. Generally speaking, our currect social and economic conditions within the USA no longer require monogamy. This of course is a relatively recent development. Less than 50 years ago, it was everybody's goal to get married.

Long term relationship... more value in a relationship then just a "flavour of the month" (like so many people out there)
Going thru tough times together, instead of getting a divorce whenever anything goes wrong.
That is probably a matter of trust.. deep trust, and love.
People are thinking about themselves too much these days. Me first, spouse second.. and you end up with a divorce... sooner or later (especially thru tough times).

So monogamy (if it really is the right person for you), gives you many benefits and life experiences you cannot get from just a "flavor of the month" fling.

I dont agree with no remarriages though.... unless the person decides thats right for him/her. (ie. spouse dies - someone should be able to find another in their lifetime)

Monogamy, not monotany, means you want to be with one person because they are more important to you than as just a sex partner. When you have a commitment to stay together, whether written or not, legal or not, it means that you are bound by more than just fun. You are there for the highs and the lows, the ups and the downs, for support, for comfort and forever. No person is an island and life is easier lived if you know someone is there for you.

Good question. I'm at that point in my life when I'm wondering if it's all that it's made out to be. There's the intimacy, yes, and the emotional "stability". If you count someone being completely emotionally dependent on you as stability, that is. Don't you ever wonder what else is out there? Do you ever get tired of seeing the same person everyday, even though you love them to death?

You feel very safe and secure in your relationship. You don't have to compete w/ other men or women for your partner's affection. Sex is better. The trust you develop is out of this world. The bond of love is extremely tight. Less chance of catching a disease. No need to get jealous over ANYthing.

I think monogamy began along with patriarchal culture in an attempt for men to know they were passing on their family name and all that entailed in terms of rights and possessions to son's that were actually biologically theirs!

Weight Loss

"When Dr. Oz said healthy, monogamous sex can help you lose weight, viewers wrote in with lots of questions.

First, Dr. Oz wants to clear up a misconception that sex burns a lot of calories. In fact, sex only burns about 25, equal to half a slice of bread.

Instead, Dr. Oz says the real value of meaningful sex—not recreational sex—comes from the release of a hormone called oxytocin, which makes you feel community, love and empathy. "That is incredibly important because besides lowering your blood pressure, what it does is it tells your gut not to send signals to the brain to eat. So it's a wonderful tool to get you where you want to be," Dr. Oz says. Losing weight then tends to increase your sex drive, he says."

It teaches people to work out their problems rather than run from them. It provides stability to a family unit, and in the long run, it gives you fond memories of good times to look back on, provided you were successful in your relationship.
