I have a 12 year old explorer XL. I've done everything I can to keep it looking brand new, and it does accept for a few plastic parts who's paint is wearing off and fading. Is there any way to re-chrome the plastic trim around the grill and headlights? Is it just a matter of taking them off, sanding/steelwooling then repainting them?

Also is there anything I can do to revitalize the exterior faded black parts between the side windows and around the back corners? A chemical that I can wipe on, or a way to remove them so I can repaint them? I foolishly tried ArmorAll on them and it just makes a mess.

Check with a restoration auto shop. Give them a call and see who they use to restore trim pieces. Call around and you will find most shops are happy to give you advice. Once you find a shop that will do the work swing by and see some before and after pieces then get a quote.

Good luck.
