Many people who get best answers these days really don't deserve them. A person would give a simple, "No." to a serious health question & get a best answer, but the people who really deserve it by giving factual information get thumbs down.

those people have several accounts on y/a & they give themselves best answers.thats why one month new users may have 138 points then a few weeks later they will have10's of thousands of points,they dont realize cheating dont prove squat!

Depends if the person cares about the points system. If they are just doing it for the sake of answering and helping out others or stuck somewhere and theres only a computer with internet and they have to come here to spare their boredom then it doesnt really matter....
But I think they do deserve to be chosen as best answer... (people need to vote more) and people who ask and choose stupid questions/answers are probably just giving their friends points and there isnt much we can do...
however, if Y! staff choose answers for us, they might not choose the best one (in asker's opinions), such as questions asking for opinions, no definitive answers, explanations (which one speaks to you), etc...

I don't now if I would like YA staff to do it. I think the asker should be the only person with that right. When people vote on best answer it is usually one of the first few answers that gets chosen. I believe people read the answers and then give best answer to the first good answer they come to instead of reading all of them.
You are right though, there are some strange answers that get chosen as best answer.

I wouldn't want them to choose a best answer to my question. I do a good job by myself. I've never let any of my questions go up for voting and I never will. Now as far as undecided questions go, I think some people get robbed of best answer. I think Yahoo should force people to choose a best answer to their own question. It's only fair to the answerer's, that is as long as there's no favoritism towards a particular answerer!

I would have a lot more best answers, I always seem to get best answer on the ones I dont really try, and the ones I take 15 minutes on lose to something totally stupid

you cant really go by the silly points, to many cheaters, all you can do is sort out the bull sh** much like life itself.
