Are edging and trimming both the same things?

Edging is done along a pathway or driveway to keep the grass and weeds from growing out over the path or driveway. Usually the cutting is done perpendicular to the surface when edging. Trimming is removal of grass or weeds in unwanted areas, such as around mailbox posts, fence posts, trees, etc.; areas where a lawnmower cannot get to. Edging is in fact a style of trimming, but trimming is not always edging.

An edger cuts a small trench in the dirt at the edge of a drive or sidewalk. This makes an actual separation of the grass and the hard surface. You can trim the grass in the same area with a trimmer but it will look different since the grass can bend over the hard surface.

No edging is usually done on the ground to grass around whatever the grass is growing into/onto. Trimming is done to bushes and plants to cut back or trim the over-growth.

edgeing is usualy done with an edger along the sides of a drive ways and sidewalks it is what actually defines the lines between the concrete and the grass trimming is more like just trimming back a bush ar foliage but egding actualy trenches a narrow space to keep grass and weeds out of these "seams"

Edging is a specific part of trimming

Edging is where you make about a one inch space between the sidewalk, or driveway from the grass. It just looks better. Trimming is where you just cut it to where it is off of the sidewalk and doesn't look messy.

Trimming is what you do to hedges, bushes or other plants to keep them shapely and not overgrown. Edging is what you do to your grass to keep it away from the sides of walkways and curbs.
