You go and find an agent ,but the agent picks you. Once you do that you'll be auditioning for movies soaps and others. And you dont have to go to hollywood.
P.S. Try finding an SAG certified agent they make sure you gat paid for your movies, and they get %10 of your check.

Umm! Well, you may want to get an agent before you get to hollywood! Take extensive acting classes, not just "plays". An agent probably wouldn't choose someone who doesn't have experiece! Start in commercial work, because if an agent has seen you before, they will be more determined to work for you! Also, if you don't get a roll, there is a lot of type casting in Hollywood, so audition a lot, but expect the roll that's description is most like you!

After you have trained and gotten some credits you can start thinking of an agent. However to truly become a hollywood actress I highly suggest that you first follow these steps:
1.) train by doing plays if you want to be a stage actress
2.) train by doing Indie films if you want to be a screen actress
Now here's the catch, if you want to be a screen actress you will have to do as many indie films that you can. More than likely you will not get paid for most indie films. However most local indie films are posted on Youtube, Funny or Die, and many other "viral" sites. Not to mention the film festivals that shorts get sent to will get you more exposure. One friend of mine, LisaNova was on youtube, before she got a spot on Mad TV.
Point blank it's looks, skill, and exposure.

Hi,
you will want to start by studying first. Get a good solid base and do some research to start to learn the business. You might even try and get into some community theater, scene study classes, more plays and then when you think you're ready, try and get an agent.
Here is a resource I have created called: What It Takes To Become An Actor. It's a free, 36-page ebooklet about getting started in the business. Just go to my site: http://www.actingcareerstartup.com/acs-blog.html , sign in and you can download it for free.
I could give you so much more information, but I think that's all you need for right now.
Good luck!

Nobody just goes to Hollywood and gets an agent, it's not that easy for most people. You have to work for it. Theatrical productions are good, but you also need on camera work to put on your resume. You also need extensive training. Take lots of classes before you go anywhere near Hollywood.
