Find the main grooves in the tread that run right round the circumference of the tyre. Place a 10p (or another coin) in this, and roll it along the groove until it reaches a bump in the bottom of the groove. This bump is the tread wear indicator.
If the bump of the tread wear indicator is still within the depth of the tread, the tyre is still legal. However, if the tyre is worn down so that there is no depth of groove above the wear indicator then your tyre is not legal.
The advantage of using a 10p coin is that its edge bumps are about 1.6mm (the legal tread depth) from the edge of the coin, so if these are visible when the coin is in the groove, the tyre is illegal.

Insert 10p piece into tread. The depth should be more than the depth of the markings around the rim of the coin..even better put the 10p towards a proper depth gauge from Halfords...they are reasonably cheap

Tyre tread markers are situated on the tyres. They are like little squares of rubber in between the treads. If you rub your finger over them and they are LEVEL with the treads then your tyres need replacing.

its not most accurate but rim of 10p is equivalent to 1mm place edge of 10p coin into tyre tread to get an idea of how low tread depth is recommended tread depth is at least 2mm though!!

10p? Ypu just need a very accurate ruler. Anything less than 4/32 of an inch is too low and should be replaced.

if the tire goes flat and the cords are showing you have 10,000 miles left to go on them just try to keep it under 100 mph on the back roads
