You find the answer to that one let me know, although it might actually be smart. After all many polls show him as a top tier candidate without even actually being in the race. If he gets in just a couple months before the primary he will need less money for the time he's doing any real advertising, and it gives the other candidates less time to try to tear him down.

Well, he just replaced his political adviser, and he's not even in the race yet...so much for Fred Thompson. He and Newt think they know the lenght a campaign should be. So they're going to take their time and discover that they weren't as bright as they thought they were. Wishfull thinking on the part of Republicans if they think they can win this one. Go Hillary!!!

Because he is brilliant tactician. Thompson has no constraints on what he can say and where he can say it. He gets more attention as the "wild card" than just another candidate. He can stay above the in-fighting.
For instance, there was the time he got himself scheduled to appear on FOX right after one of the GOP debates. He could take his time and respond to the questions instead of in the short sound-bites the panelists had to adhere to.
Don't know, yet, if I'll vote for him, but I give him credit for how he is handling himself.

First I find it astounding that not only did the first answerer post completely incorrect information , but that 5 others chose to applaud that incorrect information by giving it a 'thumbs-up' .
Sure the election is about 15 months away but the primaries come first and they're only a few months away .
I think Fred is calculating his announcement to coincide with whatever current event situation that would be the best to his advantage .
Go Fred Go !!!

The reason why he hasn't formally announced yet is because of the Law & Order reruns. If he announces his candidacy now, the Dems will demand equal time. How about those apples? Besides, he's so popular already, why bother running this early, wasting precious funding, etc.?
Of interest, a poll (and I'm not big on polls but heard this on my way to the office) in AL, indicates that he's the Republican frontrunner. Fred at 34% and Rudy in second place at 20%. :)

Just because every one else got in early it does not mean that they will win. Why get lost amongst the crowd. Let the people see what is out there. I think Hillary and obama are doing a fine job in hanging themselves. I would be surprised if we didn't see Gore jump in later as the sane one amongst the Democrats (if you can call him sane).

NBC would have to stop airing Law and Order and the cast will lose out on residuals..
besides..the campaign is traditionally a 16 month ordeal..the Dems have made the election an industry..

Maybe he doesn't have the money to start campaigning now. And he certainly is getting a lot of publicity without declaring his intention.
