What is it that makes some people compassionate or empathetic to others and then there are those that don't care about anyone except their selves?

I think that the life a person has been handed has a lot to do with it. People who had a compassionate Parent will in my opinion most likely also be compassionate. people who have never been shown compassion in their lives most likely will not be compassionate.

Well, RevJames, because we live in a fallen world, and we still have a long way to go.
Some took the early train, some are in the process of getting aboard, and some have no intention of ever getting on, such is life.

because people are selfish and its usually their parents that make them that way. its up to the compassionate ones to help change this!
