Ok, so I've been taking the depo birth control shot for almost 5 years now, which would mean I started taking it in 2002, I went today for my normal shot that occurs every 3 months and the nurse asked me "How long have you been taking depo", and I said almost 5 years, then she said "Have you been taking calcium", and I said no, so then she went and got a head nurse and they told me that I am should have been taking calcium pills because depo causes bone loss, and that in 2004 there was a black box warning saying that no one should take depo for more than 2 years. I had been on depo for 2 years when this notice came out. However today 2007 is the first time I had ever heard that it causes bone loss, that your supposed to take calcium, and that your not supposed to take it for more than 2 years. I always have weird feelings in my legs and stuff and I don't know if the depo shot is why. Shouldn't the clinic have informed me of these risks and told me that I couldn't take it any longer?

If I get a bone scan and it says I've had significant bone loss, what kind of legal action or if any should i take against this clinic, who didn't inform me of any BLACK BOX WARNING, when it came out?

Yah ok lydia or whatever........I'm supposed to go every day and check to make sure there isn't a NEW black box warning on something I'm taking........I think not.......its the clinic's reponsibiltiy to inform the patients receiving this medicine that there is a NEW side effect. YOUR LAME!

Any loss of estrogen can lead to bone loss. Birth control pills have estrogen in them, so the risk is lower with bc pills. The Depo-Provera shot only has progesterone. Your doctor should have warned you of this fact before giving the first shot and had you at least sign a waiver. Anything less than that is negligence.

I was on depo for 5 years also, starting at the age of 16. It's been almost 10 years that I have been off of it. Just this week I found out I have osteoporosis. My orthopedic surgeon recommended a bone density scan and there were the shocking results. I understand the frustration, and when I was 16 I wasn't researching "the risks", I was presented with a packet of pills or a shot that I only had to worry about 4 times a year. Being naive shouldn't be punishment.

Good luck with finding a place online that will help with a class action lawsuit aginst the ppl who produce Depo. I was on depo for nearly 9 years, i am currently 28 with the spine of a 80 year old woman. No one ever told me that depo could make me end up like this, in severe pain every day of my life. I think your best chance is to find an atty in the area that you live in.

Look up "depo provera lawsuit" and also check out the MSN Group section for depo users, they have a board there specifically for class action lawsuits.

I took it for four years and finally got off of it after hearing about the horrors women have experienced on it.

As a consumer, it is YOUR responsibility to find out about your medication's side effects, how long you should be on them, etc. It's pure laziness to do otherwise.
