For example: Because their bones are so weak, and their bodies so worn down, up to 90% of hens have broken bones or are hemorrhaging by the time they make it to slaughter. How do we figure out the actual number of hens? There's the 100% percentage. Tell me what you know and how to solve for numbers like this using the percentage.

Percentages are just fractions based on 100 (or, put another way, hundreths). So, 90% of any quanity is (90/100) or 0.9 times that number.

90% of 10 = 0.9 * 10 = 9
90% of 12000 = 0.9 * 12000 = 10800.

It's just multiplication.

Percent is Latin for Per Cent which translates into every 100.
so when I say 33% that is 33 for every hundred or 3.7% that translates to 3.7 out of every 100 of something. That is what the % sign means, it is a short notation for this latin phrase.

When using percentages think of stack of100, $1 bills, and any given number is how many you take away from the stack so 49% is remove $49 from the stack which leaves you with $51 or a little more than half the stack. 90% would be removing $90 and leaving $10 and so on. Just to give you an idea of the ratio of one thing compared to another in terms of groups of100. To find actual numbers you need to know two things:
1. Every percentage is really 0.XX where XX is the given percentage. 79%= 0.79, 43%= 0.43 56%= 0.56 9%=09%= 0.09 4.7%=04.7%= 0.047 etc..
2. the actual begining number should be given. like 500 chickens or 7000 chickens or 50,000 chickens in your example for you to get the actual number just take 90%= .90
and multiply by the given number to get the answer for an actual number of weak boned hens.

The actual no. of hens multiplied by 90% or 0.9 will yield the no. of hens with broken bones and hemorrhaging. On the other hand, if you want to solve the actual no. of hens knowing the no. of hens with broken bones and are hemorrhaging which represents 90%, just the divide the no. by 90% or 0.9 or multiply then no. by 10/9 and you'll arrive at the actual no. of hens, i.e.:

Let n = actual no. of hens, s = sick hens.
s = 0.9n
n = s/0.9

%ages are just manner of comparing things. If you were to say that "Out of 48000 hens, 43200 have broken........." it would be pretty meaningless to a lot of people. When you say "90% of hens..........", then it means that out of every 100 hens, 90 of them out of every 100 have broken bones.........So, they make it easier to compare things. That`s why we use them.

To work out a %age of a quantity on your calculator, you first of all change the %age to a decimal:

90% means 90/100, which = 0.9, so to find 90% of a quantity you multiply it by 0.9 This is called that multiplying factor to find 90%.the multiplying factor to find 72% would be 72/100, which is 0.72.Further examples:

31% = 0.31

17.5% = 0.175

3% = 0.03,and so on.

Hope this helps, Twiggy.
