What should I get a get a 28-yr-old guy for a housewarming gift?

I'd get him a nice set of linen place settings. In a heavier weight linen, color beige or brown. Very lovely and masculine.

A tool set, because I guarantee he'll need it. I'd probably recommend an electric screwdriver. It seems like a screwdriver is the tool I use most commonly around the house along with maybe a caulking gun. And when using a screwdriver it becomes a pain after a while having to turn the screwdriver like crazy. If you don't get him an electric screw-driver, then I'd recommend a Craftsman set of regular screwdrivers or a ratcheting one. I just got my own house about 3 years ago and I've used mine screwdrivers like crazy. Just installing stuff like blinds and curtain rods you use them a bunch. Then you also use them for mounting stuff on the walls, electrical work, etc.

Some other things:

A good cookingware set. Wearever turned out to be a good brand for me. Don't ever get Farberware.

A couple fire extiguishers can be good. Most people forget about them. But if you ever need them they can be a life saver.

Flashlights. I like the LED ones. They always come in handy when there is a storm or power outage or for various other uses.

Plates...provided the person doesn't mind washing them. Although I'd check to get an idea what style of ones he likes first.

A leatherman tool would work nice. I have one that my brother gave me as a gift to all of the best men at his wedding. It's a small Craftsman one that fits on my keychain. I use it all the time.

Scented candles can work good, provided you get a scent he likes.

A good set of cutting knives comes in handy. I prefer the ones with plastic handles. They are easier to wash. However, maker sure the blade goes all the way through the knife handle. A set of mine broke because the make (Farberware-grrr) didn't put the handle into the knife handle very far. If the guy likes to cook they can come in really handy. I like a mixture of serated and straight blade knives.

If you like the guy on a romantic level, and he doesn't know yet, then get him something that might tip him off, like a gift from an erotic shop. They sell couple's boardgames, and other things that might get his mind working in the right direction.

If this is a friend or relative, pay a visit with a plate of cookies and have him give you the 'grand tour'. This will give you ideas for things that might go well in the place. Or call someone closer to him, esp. anyone that helped him move, and ask them what he is missing in the new place.

If you know this person's taste, you can get them some home decorations, like a candle set or something.

If you are not sure what this person would like, you can never go wrong with a gift card to Bed, Bath, and Beyond, Home Depot, Luxury Linens, etc... Even Walmart!

Since most guys aren't great cooks...at least when they first get out on their own, I would get him a nice frying pan, or a set of grilling accessories. And then a guy's cookbook. They have a bunch of grilling cookbooks that are geared toward guys. Things like BBQ pork chops and the like. Yum. It is better than frozen pizzas any day.
