The term "downtown" is used to designate the cluster of hotel casinos located away from "The Strip". "The Strip" is a string of hotels lining South Las Vegas Blvd starting from McCarran Airport (located on the south end) and stretching for about 5 miles up to about Sahara Blvd.
"Downtown" Las Vegas is located at the north end of South Las Vegas Blvd, about a mile after "The Strip" hotels end, near Fremont St. and is where most of the older hotels are located, though most have long been remodeled. Downtown is famous for the "Fremont St. Experience", a free overhead showing of lights right out on the street. It is also the location of the "original" Las Vegas often depicted in older films. And it is true that the hotels there are generally cheaper than the ones on the strip.

For a map of downtown
http://www.lasvegasadvisor.com/maps.cfm
The Fremont street hotels are in downtown, but they are not the only hotels that are downtown.
A list of downtown hotels
Main Street Station
Plaza
California
Golden Gate
Vegas Club
Binion's
Golden Nugget
Fremont
Four Queens
Fitzgeralds
El Cortez
Gold Spike
Western
Lady Luck(closed)
The Stratosphere may "technically" be downtown, but most consider it to be the North end of "the strip".
There are some very good values in downtown.
The Golden Nugget usually has the best rates of any 4 star hotel in LV.
Main Street Station is very nice, but you have to plan well in advance for the best rates. MSS is also a small hotel with a very loyal clientele and they tend to sell out.
Vegas Club often has very good rates.
The El Cortez might be the best value, their Tower rooms are both large and nice.
If you're just searching for good deals, always check.
The Orleans & Gold Coast.
For the best rates, avoid special events, large conventions & weekends. You also need to check room rates well in advance of your trip, hold a good deal through the hotel when you find one and then keep checking in case a great deal pops up

Aloha from Down Unda!
Prices are NOT necessarily better because the values are not necessarily on Freemont Street!
Downtown is fine but the AREA of 'not the strip' is older smaller & AS expensive AS some other 'strip' [Las Vegas Blvd] casinos & hotels.
The El Cortez downtown was a great casino but I wouldn't wanna pay the 'room rate' in ANY Las Vegas Hotel. Room rates are outrageously inflated daily & unexpectedly for weekends, holidays & 'special' events like conventions or NASCAR or any & all kinds of things!
Instead we paid just UNDER $1,000[yesUS] for a MONTH in a studio Vacation Rental By Owner! To wit ~

The "Fremont Street Experience" is downtown. It's where Binions, the Golden Nugget, the 4 Queens etc. are. Fremont St. and Las Vegas Blvd is the major intersection.

What most people don't realize is that "downtown" is actually in Las Vegas while the "strip" is in a township called Paradise.

it's old vegas; what it use to be before all those glitzy strip casinos sprouted up. they offer deals there to attract people who flocked away to the strip. vegas oldtimers and veterans usually hang out and it's more laid back(if that term even exists in vegas haha). the fremont light show is alone worth the trip downtown.
