Try searching for "MovieJack", I use an older version, not sure if they still make it, but it did DVD to VCD ready MPG files, that movie editor etc can use.

If you have a DVD ROM drive installed on your computer you can indeed transfer the files on the disk. However make sure the material isn't copyrighted as this will then make transfer nearly impossible. Just open up Windows Media Player and select 'Rip'. You'll then get the licence to play the film and import into Windows Movie Maker and you won't need to convert to Windows Media Video either to do it. Get Windows Media Player 11 if if you want to keep the original format.

The only other way I can think of, other than converting the VOB files is to play it in from an external DVD player (you'll need a capture card)
Saying that, versiontracker.com is always worth a look at, lots of freeware and shareware converters there.

If you haven't got a means to capture from the dvd then you have to use a ripping program!
There are many that can be downloaded & are free.
Do a search with Yahoo!
