I agree.

Welfare does nothing but keeps you dependent of the government. I don't know why libs love it so much being that they are the ones who don't want the government up in their business in the first place.

"All power tends to corrupt and absolute power corrupts absolutely." -John Dalberg-Acton

The whole ideology around the "liberal" philosophy is not a new school of thought. It just so happens that most of the modern American "liberal" (or Democratic) party preach the basic tenants of socialism or communism light.

There is not a true caring for the poor; however the poor are used as a sounding board for government programs and the need for more government involvement. Once the government takes of the poor, there is then no reason they shouldn't expand these programs for everyone else. The government gets bigger and bigger. Next thing you know the government doesn't just pay for subsidiesed housing they own it. They they start buying neighborhoods. Then they buy businesses because the poor need some where to work. The ball keeps rolling until the government is housing and providing work for everyone. This leaves everyone on an "equal" playing field; so things are "fair." Except for the ruling elite that run the government.

If you have any questions just look at Cuba, China or the former USSR.

Don't get me wrong; there are a few good principles in socialism. These being the presence of common goals and community among the people. However, these should not be forced on a society by government control. They should be developed in grass-roots efforts by the people. The less government, the better, for everyone.

I can't believe there are so many good questions on yahoo today, it is mostly "I hate Dem's) or (I hate Rep's", but it seems some people still care about America, and what is happening to destroy her,
I emphatically say , YES YES YES, every one able bodied should have a job and work to be a productive citizen, I also think anyone on welfare should not be allowed to vote, because our politicians who are after the welfare vote would not be so inclined to give our hard earned dollar to them,
I also don't believe these welfare recipients who have been on welfare for generations should have any welfare benefits that include children born after they sign up for welfare, I know this will never fly , because a Democrat would never be elected without the welfare vote,
AUNT ACID thanks for a great question, keep it up

This is as much a slap to those who disagree with you as it is an answer to your question. Liberals have to make others poor so that they will be able to stand above them and say how much the poor are taken care of by those elite liberals. The liberal philosophy is that competition is a bad thing and that the human species does not have competition as a part of its being. In other words, we humans don't compete with each other because we don't need to. Well, if everything is given to you then you really don't have to compete for survival.

I think that just hearing it stated like that clearly indicates the biggest flaw of liberalism. Elite liberals must maintain control and force you to do what they want. They in fact want bigger government which means the government is intimately involved in our everyday lives. Liberals cannot have success because that means someone has lost and is not equal to the successor.

If you look carefully at the liberal democrats running for president, you will clearly see these characteristics being demonstrated.

Bill Gates is a Democrat. So is Oprah. Facts can not be changed to suit your agenda. Look at Congress, most million airs there are Democrats. John Edwards is not getting any "entitlements" I know about.
Define "productive members of society", I am a brick layer. Most Republicans have never really "worked" a day in their whole life. Many Republicans have Federal, State and Local "Government" jobs but do nothing. I do not see that as "productive" work. I see it as sucking off the tax payers.

Perhaps we just recognize the fact that you can't expect a hungry child to learn well, you can't expect an illiterate person to get a good job and you can't expect a poverty ridden community to be able to provide decent schools.

If you had a poorly performing company, you would invest in whatever it took to increase the profit.

No one ever talks about the folks that take the helping hand and turn their lives around, get better job training, get off the welfare roles and pay their taxes like anyone else. There are plenty of them - they just don't make the news...

Yes, we do what the poor people who can be productive members of society to be productive members of society. Unfortunately, we have a national policy (which Bush supports) that encourages unrestricted trade with countries that do not have the same labor protections as we do. This creates a disadvantage for american workers who would be able to get jobs without the outsourcing.

It has nothing to do with "entitlements" or having too many kids. Yes, some people are lazy and some people have too many children. Many other people lose their jobs because of policies that wind up encouraging the outsourcing of labor which hurts the american worker.

You want to know a little secret? Liberals do want the poor to have productive jobs and opportunities. That's why Liberals support things like school levies, financial aid for college students, and job placement.

Now, you were probably confused because we don't support things like cutting off welfare. But we liberals kind of think people need to be self-supporting before they have to be self-supporting, while conservatives kind of think the need to be self-supporting will somehow make a person self-supporting.

It's hard to prove either opinion, but it doesn't mean we're trying to make people unproductive.

You would think so. If they really care about the poor like they say, how come they hate me? I'm poor by national standards. We are a one income family with 4 kids and my hubby only grosses $34,000 as a recycle truck driver. We would actually make more if we went on welfare. And I know because my husband's cousin's family is on every government program (local, state and federal, and have been for over 10 years) and make way more than we do. Eat a hell of a lot better, too. And the wife got 2 college degrees (one to be an EMT and another to be a doctor's assistant) for free that she does nothing with, and still will not take a job, because she can make more on welfare. But according to liberals, I'm a hatemonger for wanting people to actually work for themselves. But yeah, life is so unfair for those poor, destitute people.

Welfare should be restricted to people who WORK but are having trouble making ends meet. The unemployed should not be entitled to special benefits because they are lazy. I didn't go on welfare when I was out of work, I found another job...imagine that. 90% of the people on welfare (I won't mention specifics) have a "sense of entitlement" anyway because they feel they are "owed" something by society. I had a girl who worked for me once who wouldn't accept a raise or more hours because the said "then the welfare checks stop coming" WHAT? I think the people who get money off MY tax dollars should come work for me. I have grass that needs mowing and a pool that needs cleaning.

I just want to make sure the children are fed.

I could wish for a lot of things, but last time I checked, wishing that a child had something to eat wasn't as effective as actually giving them food stamps.
