One book on the subject would hardly scratch the surface. There are far too many schools of thought on the subject...and each can be very different from the next. You've got "behaviorism", "humanistic", "cognitive", psychoanalytical, gestalt, and so many more...I would, if I were you, take a class...an introduction to psychology class that covers the many different approaches. It'll give you an idea of what you'd really like to focus on. An intro to Sociology would be helpful, too, if you'd like to learn about group behavior.

I would take General Psych and Principles of Normal and Abnormal Behavior in college. I would take a lecture course as opposed to something online because then you can get feedback and discussion from professors.

You should start off by getting books on disorders, like Schizophrenia, Bipolar, Depression, and personality disorders. These can be found at any Barnes & Noble. I think WebMD has articles on all of these too.

I love studying insomnia, maybe you will too.
