mileage is the total miles that the car has traveled.
the average you're asking about is probably the [average] miles you get from a single gallon of gas or the [average] miles you get from a full tank.

Mileage, is either how many miles you have put on the car, or the current miles per gallon that the car is doing.
Average would be the average miles per gallon that may be the average mpg that the car is doing. It would take into account all the different driving conditions that you have went through during the period that it is averaging. For instance, sitting at stop lights, driving up hill, and driving down hill also.
It would average all those things and give you a reading.
