Isn't there a federal law stating that it is a felony to aid an illegal immigrant/alien? Shouldn't the New Haven city government and the state of Conneticut by charged with this?
What's your opinion on this?

All they are doing is giving them an ID. It does not confer any legal status, nor does it require anyone to accept the ID for any particular purpose.

It may be a crime to harbor a criminal though it's not a felony to provide basic humanitarian type assistance.

If the Federal government enforced the employment laws already ON THE BOOKS there would be few illegal aliens in the US as there would be NO JOBS for them.

Employers who hire illegal aliens do so because they will work for much lower wages than legal workers and the penalties that they typically face are a minor slap on the wrist -- still cheaper than paying a legal worker a fair wage. If employers were hit with the maximum $10k per day per undocumented worker the jobs for illegals would dry up over night. And if the jobs dried up, the illegals would be rushing for the borders to get back home.

The dirty little secret that Bush doesn't want to admit to is that cracking down on undocumented workers will be "unfriendly" to businesses. Business costs will rise. That's why he's pushing his "guest worker" program. Screw that! Start enforcing the rules! Slam the employers who hire undocumented workers and the problem will solve itself! Then who cares who hands out ID cards??

Giving people ID cards does not confer any legal status on them -- but it does make it easier to track them down. The fact that it is THE ONLY ID they will use would make it even easier for the government to locate them. Giving them access to opening bank accounts, also gives the GOVERNMENT easier access to their money. I don't know, but it seems to me it's a hell of a lot easier to freeze a bank account than it is to freeze a mattress stuffed with cash.

As for "aiding" an illegal immigrant -- if an illegal immigrant trips and falls, it is NOT a felony to help him get up. Nor is it a felony to help carry an old lady's bags or to give an illegal immigrant street directions. "Aiding" is a crime only when it's aiding in bringing an illegal immigrant into the country and helping him evade authorities. Giving illegal immigrants ID cards and letting them open bank accounts does not help them evade authorities -- on the contrary, it brings them that much closer to the government's grasp.

I think that New Haven will be overrun with illegals and they can see first hand why this is a problem. This liberal area is going to get a huge eye opener. Tell all the illegals to go and settle in New Haven. lol I give it maybe a year before they change their tune. Just wait till their schools and hospitals are drowning in debt. So, let them disobey the federal government, they will get what they deserve.

Seems they are condoning them being here illegally.

I think while they are signing them up for I.D. Cards; they need to get them Social Security cards too, then they can pay taxes on the money they earn here.

In Stamford CT they have trailers and port -a- pottys put out for the illegal day laborers to stay in while they wait to get picked up for jobs.

They should have have INS workers come to those trailers/areas, give them temporary residency and make their bosses take taxes out of their paychecks.

I agree with Jay O. The city is going to be overrun with illegals. This is a case whereby the will of the people (the majority) is being overruled by the minority (the liberals who want open borders). Yes, there should be safeguards and protections for the minority voice, but according to our Constitution, majority rules.

i agree with the 1st answer its like ringing a dinner bell for them to flood to there.

they broke the law, why help them by making life easier. there are legal routes to immigrate but things like this make it easier and more attractive to do it the wrong way.

if they are willing to break one law what other are they willing to break.

we shouldnt reward bad behavior.

i live in england now. i immigrated there legally. i married a british girl. I had to go back to america apply for a visa to come back to england and get married. then i had to apply for a diffrent visa after we got married to change it to limited leave to remain. i also had to apply for a diifrent one once my 2 years were up to update my status to unlimited leave to remain. It cost me about 4000.00 total for all of the visa and that is not counting the travel that was involved and the separation from my now wife to do so.

was it inconvienent, yes, was it the right way to do it yes, if i had violated any of the rules along the way i would have been deported.

why are we the only ones who see this as a bad thing

and FYI the law also pertains to giving them aid to continue their illegal status. the id card is desinged to alow them to get a bank account so they can put the cash they gained illegally away.
