If you consider loneliness as just a time of being alone rather than a time of isolation from others with whom you would like to spend time with, it could be productive spiritually and creatively.
Alone time can potentially help someone work through problems of any sort, it can also force one into having no excuse to complete tasks that they keep putting off but need to be accomplished. Further loneliness can instigate a need to express one's self creatively through writing, drawing, or some other form of self expression.
Loneliness is something every individual experiences. It can also be negative. My guess is that positive or negative is a choice each of us as individuals make.

'Already is.
It exists and persists and must so because of its opposite. An accompaniment depends on loneliness to be an accompaniment as does the dark depend on light to be the dark.
Life salvages either, and neither is greater than its inverse twin, for which all is but a expression of life and its physics more than somewhat to be judged this, that or some needed other.
As it serves of its purpose, which is to be a foil to its opposite, it does succeed at being "anything positive."

Must say I love Gandalf.
Yes, being alone one can get to know him/herself, which is crucial as it leads to knowing what one wants in life. If you know what you want, you're half way there.
A Party of One - by Rufus is written for the loners.
