Well their government went from a monarchy to theocracy. Back when the shah (king) ruled, they were free. But now the women are forced to cover everything but their face, hands, and feet and the men can't wear shorts.
Also, young people can get arrested for even walking alone with someone of the opposite sex if it looks like they are on a date or boyfriend/girlfriend.
Basically things suck now.

Iran's government under the Shah was secular but still repressive. His government had been installed by a CIA sponsored coup because they feared that Communist were gaining power in the Iranian government. The revolution was initially popular but the imposition of religious law was not liked by many and the loss of US backing caused problems, especially because of the war with Iran. The effect in the US was also profound. Were it not fo the revolution and the hostage crisis Carter would have defeated Reagan int the 1980 election.

As the Country of Iran sought more freedom from the Monarchy, they set their sights on the one person who was exiled to France, the Ayatollah Kuhmehne (sic) who returned that nation back to a different time, back hundreds of years and forced the women into the submissive subordination that now exists. The interpretation of the Quoran or Koran was the basis for these changes and caused the nation to become self reliant, self ruled, by the Religious Leaders again, based on the interpretations they had. We, in this Country have laws that separate Religion and Secularism or separation of Church and State. Not in Iran or Iraq, for that matter. The Taliban in Afghanistan, was stricken from power right after 9/11, they had a hand in those attacks and in many more around the world, Al-Quida is an offshoot of the Taliban. All of this in the name of religion. You'd think that oppression like that would be seen as what it is by people that remember Hitler and the Holocaust.
Who says, history doesn't repeat itself? Problem is , there are few people that can put the two together, hence, we have these wars going on, between good and evil.

It has gradually gone down hill as a nation.
They are a nation sitting on huge reserves of oil and they ration gasoline for their own people. A perfect example of incompetent government.
