Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally
This is a mnemonic device that stands for Parentheses, Exponents, Multiplication, Division, Addition, Subtraction.
9-(-2)(-7)
So, first, we see that we have nothing inside parentheses (except negative signs, but there is nothing to do with these).
Next, do we see exponents? Nope, so let's move on.
Multiplication? Yup, so this is where we start. We are multiplying -2 and -7, and we know that a negative times a negative equals a positive, and 2 times 7 is 14, so we have:
9 - (-2)(-7)
9 - 14
We are done multiplying. We see there is no division or addition, so we go straight to subtraction. Since 14 is bigger than 9, we expect it to be negative when we subtract a bigger number from a smaller one. When we simply do the subtraction, we get that the answer is -5.
