I recently bought a "sweet olive" tree inside the Walmart Nursery here in my home town. My mother-in-law has one planted in her front yard, and the smell is absolutely wonderful!!! It's the sweetest scent I've ever smelt. I knew if I ever found one, I'd buy it.

Well, this morning I picked up my shovel and here I go...dig, dig, dig. I dug the hole at least 2 to 3 X's larger than the root bowl, and planted it. Well, after my bath, I found the instructions on planting the darn thing. It says to plant the "top" of the root bowl, level with the ground. That's where I might have a problem, because I planted the top of the root bowl at least 3 to 4" below ground level.....did I screw up???? Will this kill my tree? Do I need to dig it up and start over, or will it be OK?

You need to dig it up and start over. Planting a tree below the ground surface will kill it. It will suffocate. It is better to plant it with the root ball an inch or two above the ground level.

Just add soil to that hole, or mulch. You don't have to dig the tree out again. Just make like an "inverted cup" or bowl around the tree where the soil mounds around it but the water drains away. You don't want the water to puddle up there. The tree will be fine, assuming you bought and planted it in the right zone for it to thrive..

Mattie's right... but at least it will be an easier dig this time since the soil's loose. You basically just have to take the tree out, put more soil in, put the tree back.
