A midwife is a great choice for prenatal care and delivery. I've had one for 2 out of 3 pregnancies and I really recommend them.

A midwife does everything your OB does, and in some cases, more! She will provide thorough prenatal care, including the bloodwork and all necessary tests, as well as monitor your pregnancy, weight gain and discomforts.

Many women find that the midwife really shines during labor because they approach birth as a natural and normal event and are there to help you along and guide the baby out. That means you will be given more freedom at the birth then a doctor would give you. There will be less interventions, less of a relying on medication and more support and encouragement for you as you bring your baby into the world.

Midwives have a MUCH lower rate of both C-sections and Episiotomies than OB's or doctors and I think that says a lot. They are more willing to try lots of different ways to help you have the birth experience you hoped for. They know a lot of tricks and methodology that are "tried and true" that doctors are not taught in medical school.

In short, the field of midwifery, while keeping up-to-date with medical advances, has also preserved the "wisdom of the ages" that has been passed along by women just like us.

All the best to you and baby!

I am with a midwife now and have had one before. I do not know the difference between them and a doctor. I do know I have had a doctor before and switched to a midwife. I did this because a midwife tries to accommodate your needs more. They try to make your birthing plans as close to what you want as possible. Doctors seem to be a little more impersonal and strictly about rules. A midwife does basically what a doctor does, including delivering your baby. Hopes this helps.

I had a midwife and it was a wonderful experience. She answered her all of my questions and talked to me longer at my visits when I had questions. During the delivery, she was wonderful also. I enjoyed the experience. I would recommend a midwife to anyone.

I started seeing a doctor and switched to a midwife. She will deliver my baby, unless it's a c-section (God forbid...i don't want one of those). She was more patient and took more time getting to know me compared to the doctor.

The only difference i noticed is that they are more relaxed; i'm allowed to walk around during labor and monitor 20 minutes every hour, use the shower/jacuzzi tub and they don't push pain killers like the doctors do. The doctor likes you to remain in the bed the entire time so they can monitor constantly.

Good Luck and Congrats!

I am having one because my friend had really good experiences with two of her pregnancies/deliveries and midwifes.

They give you a lot of personal attention. They especially help with women who prefer a more natural delivery. They'll make suggestions and offer advice. They also will deliver. They work hard to make the delivery experience what you want it to be and not what the hospital thinks it should be.
