Because they are deep in the mire and Gerry knew that right from the start. ,that's why he refuses to return (as a family) to the UK.
I think they planned this whole thing in order to amass a fortune in sympathy money and tour the world. They probably know where Maddy is being held but don't want to "find" her until they have travelled and become millionaires. Hopefully they won't need the money in jail in the UK.

Because, for all their seeming ignorance of what is a level of acceptable care for small children, they are not stupid. They must have realised early on that their actions regarding the children could (and should IMHO) be regarded as negligent, and they wanted to cover their own backs. Not exactly the actions of 2 grief-stricken, overwraught parents who were convinced that they were just "naive" is it?

Edit: Angie11, I agree they SHOULD suffer the consequences, unfortunately it seems the only person who has suffered is Maddie.

They must know they are in the wrong and they are covering up their own tracks to save their own skin. I felt from the start there was something fishy about the whole thing.

FOR GOD'S SAKE........where on earth are you getting your information from...THE NEWS OF THE WORLD or even THE SUN???
How do you know that the Mcann's rang their solicitor?
And...
just in case you are right...which I doubt....if my child were abducted...I would be ringing anyone and everyone that may hold a glimmer of hope. For example...if the child were to be held for ransom don't you think you would need your solicitor to be able to transfer as much money as possible to Portugal..They did wrong...we all know that you don't leave your children..(many do though) but this hysterical knee jerk reaction of the mentally challenged, accusing these people of "UP TO NO GOOD" is a bridge too far.
grow up, start using the grey matter upstairs that you were gifted with, and help rather than use cheap, tabloid tactics for your own inadequate lives...just for fun...gossipy...attitude.
help not hinder you ignorant people.

one would think that if you found your child 'missing' the first action would be to notify the police and begin physically searching the surrounding areas.....if ound it really starnge they phoned lawyers and within days a limited company was set up and they were asking the public to donate to the cause.

Won't they be in trouble for leaving 3 very young children home alone when they could & can afford to pay for babysitters? I think the McCanns need to wake up, they left their 3 children so they should pay for the consequences!

Because they are Guilty, and they knew it, bet they could not believe it when all the money came rolling in, and they thought they had got away with it.

I think it's perfectly reasonable to say, as Gerry McCann did, that they needed help understanding the legal situation in Portugal. I wouldn't trust the police in *this* country to explain our laws to me properly, so I'm sure I'd want a lawyer to help me if I was ever in a situation where the law was involved abroad.

because they knew they'd screwed up big time!
why else would you need a team of lawyers to help find your little girl unless you had something to hide?

This is a question, I would liked asked myself. It was so strange for them do that. Also a Limited Company was setup very quickly afterwards. I still say that the Mc's have something to do with it.
