According to the bible it's a sin.

no i don't think so, though some people might think so. because according to them it's evil because it's about witchcraft. but i love the book so much and i don't think i've become anything bad or witchy eversince i've read them and watched the movies. it just makes my imagination even more healthy. and makes watching the movie all the more fun because it makes me wonder if all the juicy and exciting part of the book will be in the movie too. so as long as you're not practicing witchcraft or any black magic to harm others, i don't think reading and watching harry potter will be a sin.

I've heard the arguments about how it's demonic and leads kids into Satanism, but I don't believe it's any more evil than "Star Wars" (and there are, by the way, more than one or two parallels in the two series!).

The whole thrust of both series is the triumph of good over evil. In "Star Wars" they used high-tech--in Harry Potter, they use magic.

Remember, too, we're dealing with fiction--and much literature has magical overtones ("Alice in Wonderland," and most of the fairy tales we've known from childhood, to name two).

I have little doubt that Harry Potter will have as lasting a spot in juvenile literature as "Wind in the Willows," "Peter Pan," and Dr. Suess.

It is a fundemental view taken from the Bible text that tells us to stay away from Witches and/or familiars...
While I am a member of a fundementalist church, I do not see the series as any better or any worse than any other work of fiction.
I enjoy Ms. Rowlings writing, and in my opinion ANYTHING that puts a book in a childs hands, is a good thing...
If a child sees the value of reading, (assuming they were taught HOW to read in primary school) then they will move on to more important topics.

A sin?

Gods, no!

Pay no attention to those fundamentalist folk who never read any of the stories but who feel qualified to comment on them. In the meantime, you question might also be best answered in the Washington Post religion editor's commentary cited below...

Hope this helps you.

Most of the people that say it's evil or what not are the same ones who say "oh it's just a book". Or at least those are the experiences I've had. Most of these people have very mixed emotions about these books, it's quite pathetic.

No. Actually there are many parallels and hidden meanings in HP. Read it and find them, because they link a lot of the world's religions.
