I am looking for a network attached storage ( home server ) to store all my photos, movies, music etc. and have it available to everyone in the house. I need a 300-500GB drive that is reliable and quiet.

Well I have Buffalo units and a couple of others that I built using open nas. The Buffalo's are good for a real NAS device

They are priced reasonably for what they do.
If you want a less expensive method you can indeed use a USB drive attached to a computer and then share it but its not as stable as a real NAS.

Maxtor has a great external hard drive that can be hooked up via usb.....there are others. Basically all you need is an external drive shared out to the network from one of the pc's connected to your network.
