Try relocating the router so the signal isn't interrupted. A mobile phone can sometimes steal the signal as the new ones are Internet capable and they use wireless technology to access the Internet. If the problem persists after relocating the router then try the phone. If you can get a dial tone and are able to make outgoing calls then the problem is a simple matter of keeping your mobile phones out of range. You could try placing your router next to the PC unit where the signal can be shielded from signal stealing mobiles.

Next time it happens reset just the router (Not the cable modem) and see if it comes back. If it does, it is most likely your router.

By resetting them both there is no way to tell which one is giving you the problem.

Wireless routers are notorious for dropping out.

Wireless connections can be affected by spurious emissions, IE. distant lightning, household appliances, and the like. Also your telephone line may be faulty. Try listening without dialling to see if you can hear any crackling . Is your mobile phone near your PC ?.
