or

can it connect to your laptop?
is it burn proof?
does it have a power supply?
does it work?
is it the same colour?

Before purchasing the burner, check to be sure that the USB ports on your computer are USB 2.0, and not the older USB 1.1 hardware. A 1.1 can not send data fast enough to support an external DVD burner.

If it is USB 1.1, you may have to purchase a USB 2.0 PCCard to add to your laptop to give you USB 2.0.

Also, make sure the burner supports both DVD-R and DVD+R (most today do).

Pretty standard. It should have NERO software, which is the standard.

Invest now in jewel cases, and such, sleeves. you'll lose a lot of them, and they break. Buy 'em in packs at odd lots / big lots if you are in the states.

Do not go with cheap media, you'll regret it in the end. I usually buy disc packs at radio shack, packs of 25 blank CDs
