The best way is to start with the last number. In order to get -8ab you have to have either of these sets of numbers (1 / 8) or (2/4) and one of the two has to be negative. One number will have to have an A and one have a B also.
Given that the first number is 48 and not negative, it looks like the bigger number is going to have to be positive. Also, the negative is going with the A because the other negative in the equation is -24a
After that its trial and error.
If you go with 8b and -1a as the options you end up with:
(x + 8b)(y - 1a)
Somehow the numbers for x and y have to multiply together to be 48, so the options are 1/48, 2/24, 3/16, 4/12, 6/8. Plug them in and see if you can make the numbers work.
in order for the -1a to multiply by something to get -24a it looks like it needs to be 24, so I put 24 across from it and 2 in the other slot since that goes with 24 to make 48.
(24 + 8b)(2 - 1a)
Multiplying that out you get
24 x 2 = 48
24 x -1a = - 24a
8b x 2 = 16b
8b x -1a = -8ab
Done.

48 -24a +16b -8ab
= 8(6 - 3a + 2b - ab)
= 8(6 + 2b - 3a - ab)
= 8(2(3+b) - a(3+b))
= 8(2-a)(3+b)

48-24a+16b-8ab=24*(2-a)+8b*(2-a)
=(2-a)(24+8b)
=8(2-a)(3+b).ANS.
