of time for the drive icons to appear....why does it happen and how can I fix it?

It's basically searching for the files. The length of time it takes could have somethin to do with excess files on you're computer. Like temporary internet files

That latern is the symbol to let you know that the computer is searching. If you have multiple drives and/or are part of a network or on the Internet, it can take your computer several seconds (to a couple of minutes) to find all the difference devices and network locations. That is normal.

Usually it will only do it the first time you access "My Computer" after a reboot, or if it has been a while since it last accessed the network.

About the only thing you can do it to reduce the search time would be to get rid of some of your drives, or to disconnect from the network. But usually you need both the drives and the network. So your only real option is to live with it (like the rest of us).
